Ruto first meets Link when he comes to rescue her in Jabu Jabu's Belly. She refuses to leave until she recovers the Zora's Sapphire but allows him to carry her around. After retrieving the stone, Ruto is kidnapped and later saved by Link. She blushes at him and yells at him for taking too long. When Link asks for the Zora's Sapphire, Ruto gives it to him and believes that they are engaged since her mother told her that it was an engagement ring.

Over the next seven years, Zora's Domain is frozen over so Ruto goes to investigate the Water Temple there. She eventually encounters Link and complains that they still have not been married after seven years. However, Ruto is more concerned with stopping the evil in the temple and points Link in the right direction. After the evil is defeated, Ruto awakens as the Sage of Water and admits that she cannot marry Link at that time. She gives him a medallion and lends him aid in defeating Ganondorf.

Ruto does not have a large amount of popularity compared to other characters introduced in Ocarina of Time. Many find her to be creepy because of her infatuation towards Link and the fact that she believed that they were engaged. Some find it odd that a fish-like creature fell for a human-like character. However, some fans do ship Ruto with Link because they felt that their engagement should be honored, even if Link did not understand it.

  • Ruto has a treasure named after that appears in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.
