Katara fell for Jet shortly after she met him. They kissed of-screen at one point and they really enjoyed each other's company. Sokka warned Katara that he was harming innocent civilians and she refused to believe him. However, Katara later learned the truth and was very upset with him. Jet later showed up in Ba Sing Se in order to help Team Avatar find Appa. Katara refused to trust him until the rest of Team Avatar convinced her to give him a chance. Jet eventually redeemed himself but was mortally wounded while helping the group fight Long Feng. Katara attempted to heal him but her efforts were in vain.
Katara first met Aang after freeing him from an iceberg and joined him in his journey around the world to master the elements and end the war. Aang developed a crush on Katara but she was oblivious to his feelings. However, they eventually met a fortune teller and Katara was told that she would marry a powerful bender. Sokka later mentioned that Aang was a powerful bender while he was protecting the village from a volcano and Katara finally started to make the connection.
Aang and Katara were eventually trapped in the Cave of Two Lovers together. Thinking that there was no way out, Katara suggested that they kiss. They ended up kissing as their torch went out and followed stones that glow in the dark to the exit. Appa was later captured and Aang went into the Avatar State until Katara calmed him down. Eventually, Aang was killed right in front of Katara but she managed to revive him with spirit water. She cried and held him when she was close to losing him.
Aang Katara eventually danced together while they were traveling through the Fire Nation in disguise. Katara felt a little jealous when she saw Aang dancing with On Ji until he invited her to dance with him while everybody watched. Before the invasion, Aang kissed Katara before flying off which surprised her. Aang later confronted Katara about her feelings but she felt that war was a wrong time for romance and complained that she was confused. Aang then kissed Katara again which angered her and caused her to walk away. However, after the final battle, the two kissed in Ba Sing Se and started dating. Aang and Katara eventually married and had three children.
Katara is a very popular character in the Avatar fandom and is also the center of the main shipping war. Katara is shipped with Aang, Zuko, Jet and Haru which was parodied in the non-canon short called "School Time Shipping." The main shipping war is between Kataang and Zutara. Since Katara did not mutually kiss Aang until the very last scene, many speculated that she did not have feelings for Aang while others argued that she obviously did. When it was revealed that she and Zuko were still alive in the Legend of Korra, some fans hoped that she could still get with Zuko since Aang was dead by that point.
BumiBumi is the oldest son of Aang and Katara and was born as a non-bender. However, he became an airbender after Harmonic Convergence and joined the new Air Nation. Bumi was a commander of the United Forces until he retired and moved in with Tenzin. He is named after Aang's friend Bumi who was the king of Omashu. Bumi was known for being a wild man and likes to tell ridiculous stories of his past.
KyaKya is the second of Aang and Katara's children and their only daughter. She is a waterbender and a healer like her mother. Kya has always been a hippie and traveled around the world in order to find herself. However, after Aang passed away, she moved in with Katara to support her. Kya is named after Katara's deceased mother Kya who was killed by the Fire Nation. "Secret Tunnel" is her favorite song.
TenzinTenzin is the youngest son of Aang in Katara. He is a master airbender and was the Air Nomad representative of the United Republic Council until it was dissolved. Tenzin is also Korra's airbending teacher and served as a spiritual guide for her until it was revealed that he could not enter the Spirit World. He is the only one among Aang and Katara's children who got married and had children.
- Katara was originally named Kya in the pilot. The name would eventually be given to Katara's mother and her daughter as well.
