Captain America: The Winter Soldier[]

Steve and Sam first met in Washington, D.C., while jogging the same route one morning. They struck up a conversation and immediately bonded as they discussed their experiences as veterans. Their conversation was interrupted when Natasha called him to a mission. Before leaving, Sam invited Steve to stop by the VA where he worked.

After the mission, Steve went to the VA and caught the last few minutes of the group therapy session Sam was leading. They talked again, and Sam told Steve about his friend who had been killed in action.

A few days later, Sam returned home from his morning jog and heard a knock at his door. He opened it to find Steve and Natasha Romanoff on his doorstep, asking for shelter. He immediately let them in and made them breakfast. Sam insisted on joining them in their fight, offering his expertise with the Exo-7 Falcon winged jetpack. Steve and Natasha accepted. The three kidnapped and interrogated Jasper Sitwell and later fought the Winter Soldier. Teaming up with Nick Fury and Maria Hill, they destroyed the Insight helicarriers and took down both HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D.

Sam stayed by Steve's side while he was in the hospital recovering from his brutal fight with the Winter Soldier. He later joined Steve in his search for Bucky Barnes.

Avengers: Age of Ultron[]

Walking up the stairs, Sam sarcastically apologizes for missing the Avengers' battle with Hydra. Steve says that if he had known there was going to be a fight, he would have called Sam, but Sam says that he was joking and that he is perfectly happy chasing down cold leads on their missing person. He asks if Steve found a place in Brooklyn, but Steve says he probably can't afford it. Sam says that home is home, and Steve silently thinks about it.

Sam joined the Avengers after the Battle of Sokovia, along with Wanda and Vision, with Steve and Natasha acting as their trainers.

Captain America: Civil War[]

Sam and Steve sided with each other in the Sokovia Accords. Sam later accompanied him to Peggy Carter's funeral in London.

After Bucky was accused of bombing the Vienna International Center, Sharon Carter informed Steve that he was hiding in Bucharest, Romania. He and Sam traveled to Bucharest to take Bucky in themselves, as Everett Ross had ordered his agents to kill Bucky on sight. Steve entered Bucky's apartment while Sam stood guard on the roof. Steve and Bucky fought the agents who broke into the apartment. They escaped the apartment only to have Black Panther attack Bucky. Black Panther chased after Bucky, with Steve and Sam close behind. The four were eventually cornered and arrested by agents of the Joint Counter Terrorist Center, where it was revealed that the Black Panther was T'Challa, seeking revenge for his father, who had been killed in the explosion. They were taken to the Joint Counter Terrorist Center in Berlin.

As Bucky was being questioned by a psychoanalyst, the power went out. Sam and Steve rushed to Bucky's interrogation room where they found Bucky in Winter Soldier mode. He fought Sam and then Steve and began to make his way out of the facility. While Steve went after the Winter Soldier, Sam tried to follow the psychoanalyst as he left, but lost him in the crowd.

After the fight, Steve and Sam took an unconscious Bucky to an abandoned warehouse and locked his metal arm in a vise, not knowing if Bucky would wake up as himself or the Winter Soldier. He woke up as himself, and mentioned memories of Steve's childhood to prove it. Steve was pleased to hear that Bucky remembered him, and Sam had to remind him of their dangerous situation. Bucky informed Sam and Steve that there were several other Winter Soldiers being kept in cryo-stasis in Siberia, and the psychoanalyst was probably on his way to activate them. The three of them, joined by Wanda, Clint Barton, and Scott Lang, decided to deal with the Winter Soldiers on their own, since the Avengers who had signed the Accords would probably not be allowed to help them.

Steve and Sam fought side by side at Leipzig-Halle Airport. As the battle wore on, Sam realized that not all of them were going to make it out of there, and he told Steve as much. He told Steve and Bucky to continue on to Siberia while the rest of them distracted the other team. Steve agreed to his plan, and he and Bucky escaped in a Quinjet.

Sam, Wanda, Clint and Scott were eventually arrested and imprisoned in the Raft. Tony Stark visited Sam and asked where Steve and Bucky were going. Sam told him, after making him promise to go as a friend.

After Steve and Bucky left Siberia, Steve infiltrated the Raft and broke his teammates out. While Bucky was cryogenically frozen in Wakanda, Sam and Steve went on the run from the government together. They were later joined by Natasha, who was on the run for helping Steve and Bucky escape from the airport.

Avengers: Infinity War[]

After receiving a call from Bruce Banner that Vision was in trouble, Sam, Steve, and Natasha traveled to Scotland, where Vision had met up with Wanda, and saved them from an attack by Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive. Sam and Steve fought side by side in the ensuing battle in Wakanda. Steve survived Thanos' snap to kill half the universe, but Sam did not.

Avengers: Endgame[]

Sam noticed Steve, who looked old now, sitting on a log. He approached him and asked if something had gone wrong or right. Steve explained that after he had put the stones back, he had thought about trying the life that Tony had told him to get. Sam asked how it had worked out for Steve. Steve told him that it had been beautiful. Sam confessed that he was happy for Steve, but the fact that he had to live in a world without Captain America was bumming him out.

Steve brought out his shield and told Sam to try it on. After Sam did so, Steve asked how it felt. Sam replied that it felt like it belonged to someone else. Steve assured him that it wasn't. Sam then thanked him and said that he would do his best. Steve pointed out that it was the reason the shield belonged to Sam. After Sam asked if Steve would tell him about Peggy, Steve stated that he wouldn't.

Fanon[]

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Natasha kisses Steve while undercover. Afterwards, she asks Steve if it was his first kiss since 1945. Steve tells her no, but does not elaborate. Many fans believe that Steve is referring to Sam here, and that the two hooked up soon after they met, especially after the scene where Steve visits Sam at the VA. Other evidence that shippers cite is that Steve knows Sam's address, even though Sam never told him.
