Captain Charming is the slash ship between David Nolan and Killian Jones from the Once Upon A Time fandom.

Canon[]

The relationship between the two started out hostile, with them both disapproving of the other's lifestyle. This particularly came from David's side, as he often resorted to physical violence against Killian. Killian, however, was usually more passive in his disliking of David, opting for mostly verbal insults and self-defense.

However, despite this initial hatred, the two eventually learned to see a different side to the other and became friends over the course of the show.

Season 2[]

IN THE NAME OF THE BROTHER

Hook becomes heavily injured after being hit by a car and is then attacked by Mr Gold. David, along with Emma, have to hold Gold back in order to prevent Hook from being harmed any further.

TINY

Early in the episode David and Mary Margaret decide to try and find out what Cora is planning. David decides that Hook is the right person to ask, as he and Cora are allies. This leads to both him and Mary Margaret discharging Killian from the hospital in order to interrogate him on his ship.

On the walk along the docks to get there, Killian makes a move on Mary Margaret. This strikes a nerve with David, who hits Hook in his already injured ribs and threatens him, demanding that Killian tell them where the Jolly Rodger is. Killian says that looking for Cora is useless, but David brushes it off and forcefully pushes Killian forward. Shortly after, Hook once again flirts with Mary Margaret, leaving David looking annoyed.

They climb aboard the ship and, after some conversation, David snappily asks Killian about Cora’s plans. Killian respona that he is unaware of what she is going to do. David doesn’t believe him and in response Killian tells David that his wife should torture it out of him, since it would be ‘fun for the both of them’. David reacts very angrily to this and holds hook by the neck against his ship, threatening to torture him instead. Killian hands over the key to the giants cage, and tells them to ask him about Cora. While they’re distracted by the giant, Killian escapes.

THE QUEEN IS DEAD

When David arrives for work at the sheriff's station, he is distracted and then ambushed by Hook. Killian knocks him out with a crowbar and steals a key from his back pocket, using it to open a drawer and take his hook from inside in order to execute his revenge on Rumplestiltskin.

When Mary Margaret finds David later, he says he will enjoy putting Hook in jail, implying his hatred has only grown following this incident.

AND STRAIGHT ON 'TIL MORNING

Hook arrives at the charming household in order to fight for their side rather than Greg and Tamara's. When he walks in, David immediately punches him in the face to get him back for the last time they met. The two bicker for a few moments, with David threatening to use his gun, before the others steer the conversation into being more relevant.

When David comes up with a plan to escape Storybrooke's destruction, Hook says that he can help, to which Emma responds that he cannot be trusted. David says that they won't need to trust him because he'll go with him, and says that he'll shoot Killian in the face if he does anything to betray the group. Hook comments that David is being hostile, with him responding that he's just being clear. Hook looks at him in silence or a few moments before everyone begins leaving. Watching Regina speak to Henry prompts Hook to say to David "The things we do for our children." before David grabs him by the arm and escorts him out of the loft.

The two drive to the cannery together and realise time is running out. They rush inside and while they traverse their way through David asks Killian what he's fighting for. Hook responds that he's fighting for himself, saying that it's plenty of motivation.

Later, the two end up in physical conflict with Greg and Tamara and are split up because of this. After both their fights are over David tries running off after them, with hook gabbing hold of his arm and pulling him back. This angers David, who questions Killian's actions before he explains that he managed to get ahold of a bean and that more than one isn't necessary. David isn't satisfied by Hook's reassuring and tries running again. Hook holds him back, saying he should live to fight another day and calling him 'mate'. David replies that he is not Hook's 'mate' and angrily rips the pouch containing the bean off of Killian's belt before running to get back to the others.

The two arrive back at Grannies together and join the crowd that has gathered. The townsfolk make the decision to not let Regina sacrifice herself, a decision that causes Hook to be displeased and try to take the bean from the Charmings so he won't have to risk his own life.

Hook tricks the group into believing he has given the bean back and tries to sail off, abandoning them. He later backtracks on this decision and decides to help them get Henry back, who has been kidnapped by Greg and Tamara.

Season 3[]

THE HEART OF THE TRUEST BELIEVER

When Regina teleports a mermaid onto the Jolly Rodger, Hook angrily tells her to get it off of his ship. David, while he hates to say it, agrees with Hook.

When the mermaid calls a storm, the ship begins to loose balance. David yells at Hook to keep his grip. Hook responds that it wasn't him, but was the ship taking on water. Tension rises between them.

Regina and Snow begin to have a physical fight, causing David to try and intervene. Hook tells him to let them go, calling them 'slags'. This angers David, who tells Hook not to insult his wife and begins a fight with him. This continues for a while until Emma jumps into the water and gets knocked out. Everyone is alarmed by this and David stands on the edge of the ship in an attempt to dive in after her, while Hook rushes over and tells him to wait. David's immediate reaction is to act hostile, shouting at Killian that Emma will drown. Hook responds that David will too and tells him to let him help. He then instructs the others to tie a rope to David so they can pull him and Emma safely back up.

Later, when Emma tells them they all need to work together, David responds by saying "With him?" while gesturing to Hook. This causes Killian to give him an offended look. When the conversation is over and the others begin to walk away, David stares at Hook while brandishing his sword and smirking.

LOST GIRL

While traversing through Neverland, David attempts to cut through a bush of dreamshade before Hook pulls his arm back and tells him to stop. David becomes offended and tells him that he can handle 'a couple of thorns', ripping his arm away as he does so. Hook takes hold of his arm once again and informs everyone about dreamshade and it's dangers, suggesting they go another way to avoid it. David is still offended however, and says that they'll go the other way, ignoring Hook's suggestion. Afterwards, Killian comments that David is a 'distrustful fellow' to Emma.

Further in the episode, the group begin discussing whether or not they should use magic on Pan's map, with Hook agreeing that Emma is correct in her insistence to not do so. David says that, sadly, he agrees. Hook responds in a teasing tone, saying that he can feel he's winning David over. David looks at him for a moment before turning away. When this topic once again comes up, David repeats the same point, causing Hook to say that, for once, he agrees with him. This prompts David to look over to him in shock before Hook teases him again by saying that he told David they were getting along. David looks shocked for a few seconds before turning away again, looking slightly frustrated.

QUITE A COMMON FAIRY

When the group are continuing to traverse Neverland, Hook stays back with David, telling him he knows about his dreamshade poisoning. He inspects his wound, telling him he doesn't have long to live. Killian urges him to tell his family but David refuses, keeping it between the two of them and opting for them to solve it themselves.

When the two get to Tinkerbelle's tree house and cannot find pixie dust for a cure, Hook tells David he's sorry, a look of concern on his face.

NASTY HABITS

While the five discuss their tactics with Tinkerbelle, she warns them about the dangers of dreamshade. David is upset by the mention of it, and glances over at Hook to find him already looking back. David looks away, still worried.

In an attempt to further their progress in finding a way out of Neverland, the group go to Neal’s old hideout. Hook asks Emma for help with getting the door open, David interjects and says he’ll do it, not wanting Killian to get close to Emma.

While the two are out of earshot, Hook comments on David’s condition worsening. David brushes it off, taking the rope he and Killian were pulling and doing it himself.

The other three go through the door and David tries to follow before Killian stops him. He urges him further to tell his family about the poison, with David asking why Hook cares. Killian responds by asking why David doesn’t seem to care, to which he replies that there’s no point in telling his family when there’s no hope to stop the poison. Hook says that if there’s something he’s learned from the heros, it’s that ‘there’s always hope’. David begins to get suspicious, asking if there’s something Killian isn’t telling him, Hook denies this.

The two then go inside and Hook attempts to light a torch, but fails to do so. David approaches behind him and lights it for him, leaving Hook looking annoyed.

Fanon[]

Starting out as more of "crack" pairing, the ship eventually began to be shipped more seriously. Fans enjoyed the development of their relationship from antagonistic to best friends. Some saw a lot of chemistry between the two and started to ship it because of that. Later seasons fueled the ship some more, although it never reached the heights of other OUAT ships as both Charming and Hook were in Canon relationships that were popular in the fandom. It is by far one of the most popular slash ships in the fandom, given that most of the fandom is compromised of het and femslash ships.

On AO3, Captain Charming is the sixth most written ship for Hook and the third most written for Charming. There are currently 185+ slash fics, and 174 gen fics.
