Coulson escorts Steve to the SHIELD base answering questions that he has on the Hulk. He says that it's an honor to meet Steve, which he smiles at. But Coulson keeps rambling a little too much, making it awkward. Steve's just happy to help stop Loki. Coulson tells him that they made adjustments to the uniform, which surprises Steve, since he figured the stars and stripes would seem old fashioned. Coulson says that given everything that's going on, they just might need a little old fashioned.
They arrive at the base and meet Natasha. She tells Coulson to get to the bridge. She asks Steve if he asked him to sign his trading cards. Steve is confused, but according to Natasha they're vintage and he's proud of them. Later Coulson asks him to sign his cards, as long as it's not to much trouble. Steve says it's fine. Coulson continues, clearly proud of the cards.
After Coulson is killed by Loki, Fury shows Steve and Tony that the cards were in his pocket. Coulson never gave up hope. Late Steve asks Tony if it was the first time he lost a soldier, referring to Coulson.
Fans enjoyed Coulson fanboying over Steve. This made Coulson seem a little more human than the other SHIELD agents. In fanfiction, fans explored what would have happened if Coulson had lived, and how his relationship with Cap would have continued.
